The continuing algal bloom along the South Australian coastline is having a devastating impact on our unique, local marine life and community.

As the situation continues, Citizen Science Programs are playing a vital role in tracking the spread and impact of the algal bloom and assisting scientists in trying to understand this phenomenon. These Programs such as our Reef Watch SA Reef Rambles, offer community an opportunity to get involved and help provide insights that contribute to the understanding, effective management and conservation of marine ecosystems such as our Great Southern Reef.

Are you an ocean lover, marine enthusiast or citizen scientist curious to learn through a safe, guided tour?


Join our expert Marine Biologists for a safe, guided Reef Ramble citizen science tour at Robe/Beachport in the South East.

During each Reef Ramble, you will be safely guided by an expert marine biologist during low tide when the shoreline is exposed and learn:

  • about the wonders of the Great Southern Reef (what it is and why it is important);

  • how to use the global citizen science platform iNaturalist;

  • about the unique intertidal plants and animals you may/will observe;

  • about other current marine community programs including how you can become involved and what action you can take.

Event duration: 90-120 minutes. Tickets are just $5 and bookings are now open!

Please consider prior to registering for 2025/26:

  • We are acutely aware of the algal bloom and its effect on our South Australian coastline and community. We are following the recommended State and Federal Government's advice and will assessing daily conditions through Surf Life Saving SA's Beachsafe app and companion website Beachsafe.org.au.

  • During the Reef Ramble, we may come across deceased marine life and sea foam. Please consider your wellbeing and physical health and register only if you feel comfortable doing so.

  • We won't be providing an update on the current harmful algal bloom. For the latest information on the algal bloom to help you stay informed, stay safe, and understand how the situation is being managed, as well as resources and community projects that you can become involved in – please visit the Conservation SA Harmful Algal Bloom webpage.
