Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) in NSW

Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE), also referred to as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in New South Wales, is a vital requirement for lawyers. It ensures they maintain their practicing certificates and remain professionally competent.

MCLE Requirements for NSW Lawyers
  • Annual Obligation: Lawyers are required to complete 10 MCLE units each year between April 1 and March 31.
  • Mandatory Fields: To meet compliance, at least one unit must be earned in each of these four key areas:
    • Ethics and Professional Responsibility
    • Practice Management and Business Skills
    • Professional Skills
    • Substantive Law
Flexible Options to Earn CPD Units

Lawyers can fulfill their MCLE requirements by taking advantage of flexible learning options, including completing online CPD courses. These courses often feature engaging materials such as quizzes, tests, and scenario-based learning, making it easier to balance ongoing education with professional commitments.

Stay current, stay competent—MCLE helps you sharpen your skills and uphold the high standards of the legal profession!
