About

The Creating an Inclusive Narrative project is an initiative by the Australian Baha'i community that aims to advance the national conversation on social cohesion by re-examining prevailing conceptions and articulating constructive characteristics that can draw us closer to realising our common humanity, unifying thoughts and action, facilitating harmonious interactions, and increasing inclusion and belonging. It seeks to bring together representatives from a broad array of backgrounds, perspectives and sections of society in a series of roundtable discussions across the country to explore fundamental questions about who we are and where we want to be as a nation.

The project will synthesise the most prevalent and unifying insights, ideas and descriptions of our common identity and shared values, which can move us towards strengthening social cohesion and inclusion. A formal and iterative document will be produced, which will be offered as a resource and framework for social endeavours. It can be utilised to foster an ongoing conversation at the grassroots to national levels of society, encourage and motivate neighbourly interactions, and contribute towards the thinking which shapes and inspires community projects, government policy and public opinion.

The first iteration of the project took place from 2019 - 2020, engaging over 500 participants in 50 roundtable consultations across the country. The outcome of this first iteration was the publication Creating an Inclusive Narrative, which captured the vision, hopes, and aspirations of Australians to foster a socially cohesive society. It describes a narrative of our past and current reality, but also a narrative of the future – the kind of society participants envision for generations to come.

The second iteration of this project will run from 2025 to 2026 through a new series of roundtables, which will allow us to collaboratively explore, develop, and further refine the evolving narrative of our nation. The country is invited to journey alongside one another in an exploration of these fundamental questions and continue advancing a visionary and shared description of ourselves, which will strengthen social cohesion into the future.
