Why this course

Many adults want to support young people through mental health challenges, while feeling unsure what to say or do.

This course builds the knowledge and practical skills to recognise early signs, start supportive conversations, and respond clearly and appropriately when a young person may be experiencing:

• Emotional distress or changes in behaviour
• Ongoing mental health challenges
• Situations that require immediate support

The focus is on structured, evidence-based action you can apply in real situations.


What you will learn

• How to recognise signs of common mental health challenges in young people
• How to start and guide supportive conversations
• How to use the MHFA Action Plan in real situations
• How to respond to mental health crises with clarity and structure
• How to support while maintaining clear personal boundaries

• Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
• Non-suicidal self-injury
• Panic attacks
• Traumatic events
• Severe psychotic states


How the blended course works

This course combines flexible self-paced learning with live, instructor-led sessions.

Self-paced eLearning

• Approximately 4 hours
• 10 interactive modules
• Completed before the live sessions
• Includes an eLearning completion certificate

Live online sessions

• Three sessions (2.5 hours each)
• Delivered via Zoom by an accredited Youth MHFA Instructor
• Focused on discussion, real scenarios, and skills practice

No previous mental health training is required.


Accreditation

Participants who complete both components may undertake an online assessment to receive Youth Mental Health First Aid Accreditation, recognised nationally.
